THE NAVIGATORS
Year One
Miss Marsland
As part of our topic 'Water, Water, Everywhere!' and our science topic 'Everyday Materials', year 1 created and tested some flood barriers. We started by looking back at the local floods of 2007 and what caused them. We discussed how we could prevent roads, houses and shops from flooding. We worked in small groups to use different everyday materials to create a flood barrier. This is when the fun began! Mrs Womble and Mrs Holland had great fun throwing water at the children and their flood barriers to test if they would survive a flood. Most barriers survived but some did let lots of water in. Unfortunately, some of the children got very wet!!

This half-term in outdoor P.E, we have been learning how to play tennis and attacking and defending games. We have had lots of fun playing friendly competitions against the other teams. Come and have a look!
For Show and Tell this week, we had gymnastic certificates, gymnastic badges, fancy cupcake lip gloss and amazing Lego. Super!
In art this week, we have been making 3D umbrellas. It took us all afternoon but they look great! This week is Christian Aid Week and this year the focus is 'Stronger than the Storm.' We looked at why Christian Aid raise money and what it is used for. We discussed why it's important to think of others. We then conducted an investigation, which links closely with our science topic 'Everyday Materials' on which materials would survive a hurricane (i.e. a hairdryer!) Each group had a material to use to build a house we then tested it to see if it would survive. Some did and unfortunately, some didn't! For show and tell this week, Tommy brought in his karate belt and some photographs from his family holiday to Disneyland! He also showed the children his Pirates of the Caribbean necklace made from real gold! ARRR!!
We received a postcard from the Queen asking for our help! The Queen wanted to know which material is the most waterproof for an umbrella. The children had to think of some materials to be tested then predict whether they would be waterproof or not. We then worked together to test them using some scientific equipment. We found out that out of the 6 materials we tested, PVC material was the most waterproof. We had so much fun! In numeracy this week we have been subtracting using our place value knowledge. We have been using different concrete objects to subtract practically including counting bears, cubes and numicon. We have also been subtracting on a number line. Come and have a look at our slideshow! This week in Show and Tell, Theo brought in his favourite teddy from the TV show 'One Night at Freddy's' and Gabriel S brought in his uncle's Manchester United football top and scarf which was over 30 years old! Wow!
As promised, I have attached the photographs of the children's artwork which is displayed on the stairs. The children created their own emblems as part of St George's Day and designed their own shields with their emblems on. Come and have a look!
